Bulgaria's capital markets are regulated by the Financial Supervision Commission (FSC / ะะคะ), which oversees investment intermediaries, insurance, and pension funds. As an EU member, Bulgaria is subject to MiFID II directives, though it has not yet adopted the euro โ making the Bulgarian Lev (BGN) the local currency, pegged 1:1 to the euro under a currency board.
Investor compensation in Bulgaria is covered by the Compensation Fund for Investors (FKIZ), protecting up to โฌ20,000 per investor. Bank deposits are protected up to โฌ100,000 (BGN equivalent). Bulgaria has a flat income tax rate of 10% โ one of the lowest in the EU โ which also applies to capital gains from securities, making it attractive for individual investors.
Bulgarian investors increasingly use international platforms such as XTB, eToro, and Interactive Brokers since the domestic brokerage industry is relatively small. The Bulgarian Stock Exchange (BSE) operates in Sofia but is a minor market. Most sophisticated Bulgarian investors trade EU and US markets via MiFID II-passported brokers rather than the domestic exchange.
