Croatia joined the Eurozone on 1 January 2023, replacing the Kuna with the euro (EUR). Financial markets are supervised by the Croatian Financial Services Supervisory Agency (HANFA), which oversees investment firms, funds, and the Zagreb Stock Exchange (ZSE). Croatia's EU and Eurozone membership means full MiFID II protection applies to all Croatian retail investors.
Investor compensation in Croatia is provided through the Croatian Agency for Supervision of Financial Services investor protection fund, covering up to โฌ20,000 per investor for investment claims. Bank deposits are guaranteed up to โฌ100,000 through the Croatian Deposit Insurance Agency. The switch to the euro in 2023 eliminated FX risk for Croatian investors using euro-denominated platforms.
Capital gains from securities in Croatia are taxed at 10% โ one of the lower rates in the EU โ with a 24-month holding period exemption (gains on assets held over 2 years are tax-free).
