Investing in Greece: What You Need to Know

Greece's capital markets are regulated by the Hellenic Capital Market Commission (HCMC / Επιτροπή Κεφαλαιαγοράς), responsible for the supervision of investment firms, the Athens Stock Exchange (ATHEX), and collective investment funds. Greece is a Eurozone member and has undergone significant financial sector reforms since the 2010–2018 debt crisis period.

The Supplementary Insurance Capital (EKAS) and EU Investor Compensation Scheme protect Greek investors up to €30,000 per investor for investment claims — slightly higher than the standard EU minimum. Bank deposits are covered up to €100,000. Capital controls imposed during the 2015 crisis have been fully lifted, and Greek investors can freely transfer funds to foreign brokers.

Greek investors increasingly favour EU-passported brokers like XTB, eToro, and Interactive Brokers for access to international markets, since the Athens Stock Exchange (ATHEX) is a relatively small market focused on Greek equities. Capital gains from shares listed on recognised EU exchanges are taxed at a flat 15% in Greece. Always verify that a broker is licensed by the HCMC or passported under MiFID II before investing.
