Investing in Finland: What You Need to Know

Finland's financial markets are regulated by the Finnish Financial Supervisory Authority (Finanssivalvonta / FIN-FSA), which oversees banks, investment firms, fund managers, and insurance companies. Finland is a Eurozone member and has one of the highest rates of household equity ownership in Europe, with a strong culture of long-term investing through pension funds and equity savings accounts.

The Finnish Investor Compensation Fund (SIJOITTAJIEN KORVAUSRAHASTO) protects investment claims up to €20,000 per investor. Bank deposits are guaranteed up to €100,000 through the Finnish Deposit Guarantee Fund. Finns also benefit from the Osakesäästötili (OST) — a tax-advantaged equity savings account introduced in 2020 that lets investors defer capital gains tax.

Capital gains and dividend income in Finland are taxed as capital income at 30% (or 34% above €30,000). The OST allows internal transfers between shares within the account tax-free until withdrawal, similar in concept to an ISA in the UK. Popular platforms with Finnish-language support include Nordnet, OP Bank's brokerage, and international brokers like DEGIRO and XTB.
