Investing in Belgium: What You Need to Know

Belgium's financial sector is regulated by two bodies: the Financial Services and Markets Authority (FSMA) oversees investment firms, fund managers, and intermediaries, while the National Bank of Belgium (NBB) supervises banks and systemic institutions. Belgium is a founding EU member and fully subject to MiFID II investor protection rules.

Belgian investors are protected up to €20,000 per investor through the Beschermingsfonds / Fonds de Protection for investment claims. Bank deposits are guaranteed up to €100,000. Popular platforms among Belgian investors include DEGIRO (Netherlands-based but widely used), Bolero (KBC Group), and international names like eToro and Interactive Brokers.

Belgium applies a 30% withholding tax (précompte mobilier) on dividends and interest income, making dividend-focused investors sensitive to platform tax reporting. Stock market transactions are also subject to a Taxe sur les Opérations de Bourse (TOB) — a small transaction tax on trades. Investors should confirm whether their broker handles Belgian tax reporting or if manual declaration is needed.
