View rankings โCuba operates a state-controlled economy with very limited private financial markets. The financial system is regulated by the Banco Central de Cuba (BCC). Cuba has a dual-currency system โ the transition to a unified Cuban Peso (CUP) was completed in 2021 following the elimination of the CUC (Convertible Peso). Foreign investment is tightly controlled and primarily channelled through joint ventures with state entities.
US sanctions (OFAC) severely restrict financial transactions with Cuba, making it nearly impossible for most international banks and brokers to serve Cuban residents. There is no functioning domestic securities exchange. Most Cubans have limited access to formal investment instruments beyond bank deposits at state-owned banks.
Despite restrictions, remittances from the Cuban diaspora (primarily in the US, Spain, and Miami's Cuban community) are a critical economic lifeline. Crypto, particularly USDT, has gained significant traction among Cubans as a way to receive international transfers outside the traditional banking system. Access to international investment platforms is extremely limited for most Cuban residents due to sanctions and internet restrictions.
