The financial sector is regulated by the Superintendencia del Sistema Financiero (SSF). El Salvador is fully dollarized (official currency: USD) and has invested significantly in Bitcoin infrastructure, including the Chivo digital wallet.
The government's Bitcoin bond initiative (Volcano Bonds), backed by Bitcoin and funded by geothermal energy from Salvadoran volcanoes, represents a unique sovereign crypto experiment. Despite Bitcoin's legal tender status, adoption has been slower than anticipated β most businesses prefer USD for transactions. Traditional banking is regulated by SSF, with deposit protection limited compared to developed markets.
El Salvador's unique regulatory stance on Bitcoin and its dollarized economy make it an interesting case study for crypto investors. Bitcoin exchanges and wallets operated through government infrastructure (Chivo) and private platforms (Strike, Bitfinex) are widely available. For traditional investment access, USD bank accounts can be used to fund international platforms like Interactive Brokers or Coinbase. El Salvador has eliminated capital gains tax on Bitcoin profits for foreign investors (not resident for tax purposes).
All platforms listed for El Salvador are regulated by SSF El Salvador or are internationally regulated brokers accepted locally. We do not list unregulated or offshore-only brokers.
