The Bolsa Nacional de Valores (BNV) in San Josรฉ is the national exchange, primarily used for government bonds and corporate paper. Costa Rica uses the Costa Rican Colรณn (CRC), though USD is widely accepted in commerce.
Costa Rica has a well-developed banking system with both state-owned banks (Banco Nacional, Banco de Costa Rica) and private banks (BAC, Scotiabank) offering investment accounts. The SUGEVAL oversees regulated investment intermediaries. Many Costa Ricans prefer USD-denominated time deposits as their primary savings vehicle given the historical colรณn depreciation.
Capital gains in Costa Rica have been taxed since 2019 at a flat 15% rate on gains from capital assets including securities. Dividend income is taxed at 15% withholding. Costa Rica's growing tech sector and English-speaking population make it a hub for fintech services in Central America. International platforms like Interactive Brokers and eToro are accessible via international wire transfer, and crypto adoption is growing steadily.
All platforms listed for Costa Rica are regulated by SUGEVAL Costa Rica or are internationally regulated brokers accepted locally. We do not list unregulated or offshore-only brokers.
