Overview

Starling Bank was founded in 2014 by Anne Boden — a banking veteran who left AIB to start a fundamentally different kind of bank. It received its UK banking licence in 2016. Unlike many neobanks that raised significant VC funding before achieving profitability, Starling became the first UK neobank to reach profitability in 2020 and has maintained profitability since.

Starling has won the UK's best current account multiple times at the British Bank Awards and has consistently been ranked first or second by the CMA for overall service quality among personal current accounts — ahead of all traditional banks and other challengers. The business current account is the most comprehensively featured free business banking product in the UK.

The product focus is banking excellence: current account, Savings Spaces, business banking, loans and overdrafts, and international payments. Unlike Revolut or Monzo which have expanded into stocks and crypto, Starling focuses on doing banking exceptionally well.

Verdict

WhichBrokr's Take

Starling is the best UK challenger bank for most people who want a main personal or business current account. CMA #1 service ranking, full FSCS protection, profitable business model, free account, and industry-leading customer support create the most trustworthy and highest-quality banking experience among UK neobanks.

Between Monzo and Starling: Starling has slightly better customer support ratings (Which?), a more mature business account, and profitability. Monzo has a broader product suite (Monzo Investments) and larger customer base. Both are excellent — the choice often comes down to app preference. Try both free products.

Best for: UK personal banking (main account), UK small business owners (best free business account), and those prioritising banking quality and FSCS protection. Not ideal for: Investment-focused users (no ISA/SIPP/stocks — use Freetrade or HL), international ATM-heavy users (Revolut Metal better), or those wanting crypto.
