🔬 How we rank brokers

Every broker on this list has been tested with a real account by Gonçalo Marcelino, WhichBrokr's founder and lead analyst. We score across fees, regulation, platform usability, asset range, and customer support. No broker can pay to appear higher — rankings are 100% editorial. Learn more about our methodology →

Frequently Asked Questions

For beginners, we recommend XTB or Trade Republic — both offer €0 commission on stocks, a clean mobile app, and strong EU regulation. Trade Republic is particularly simple; XTB gives you more research tools as you grow.
The main fees are trading commissions (per trade), currency conversion fees (if you trade in foreign currencies), inactivity fees (charged if you don't trade for 6–12 months), and withdrawal fees. Many 'zero commission' brokers make money on the currency spread instead.
Regulated brokers must hold client funds in segregated accounts and are covered by investor compensation schemes — typically up to €20,000 in the EU or £85,000 in the UK. Always check that the broker is regulated in your country.
Dedicated brokers almost always offer lower fees, more assets, and better tools than banks. Banks are convenient but typically charge 0.5–1% per trade. Brokers like DEGIRO or XTB charge a fraction of that, or nothing at all.
